    Overview

    • Rhinitis is defined as a common allergic reaction of nasal mucosa resulting in symptoms such as sneezing, running nose, and itching.
    • Rhinitis and its related causes are usually associated with the ENT department.
    • There are various types of rhinitis, but acute rhinitis is the commonest form amongst all. Acute rhinitis is mainly caused due to viral, bacterial and allergic reactions or seasonal variations.

    Allergic rhinitis

    Caused when allergens in the air trigger the release of histamine in the body.  Most common cause of allergic rhinitis is pollen allergies as well as changes in the weather conditions. 

    Symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis are: 

    1. Running nose 
    2. Running eyes 
    3. Sneezing 
    4. Redness around nose and eyes 
    5. Edema on face 
    6. Iching 
    7. Sore throat 
    8. Eczema: extremely dry, itchy skin. 
    9. Excessive fatigue. 

    Causes of allergic rhinitis

    When the body interacts with or comes in contact with any pollen or allergic substance it reacts with that substance and releases histamine. 

    Apart from pollen there are certain agents responsible to cause allergic rhinitis:

    • Dust mites 
    • Grass pollen 
    • Animal fur 
    • Animals old skin of dander 

    Risk factors for allergic rhinitis:

    Allergies may affect any one in any specific area, but usually allergic conditions are likely related to family history and patients already suffering from any other allergic conditions such as eczema or asthma are vulnerable for allergic rhinitis as well.  Some external factors responsible are: 

    • cigarette smoke 
    • chemicals 
    • cold temperatures 
    • humidity 
    • wind 
    • air pollution 
    • hairspray 
    • perfumes 
    • colognes 
    • wood smoke 
    • fumes 

    Complications of allergic rhinitis:

    It is quite unfortunate that allergic rhinitis is not cured totally. Treatment and management are helpful in preventing the chances of occurrence of episodes. complications that can arise from hay fever include: 

    • inability to sleep from symptoms keeping you up at night
    • development or worsening of asthma symptoms
    • frequent ear infections 
    • sinusitis or frequent sinus infections
    • absences from school or work because of reduced productivity
    • frequent headaches

    Non allergic Rhinitis:

    • Nonallergic rhinitis involves chronic sneezing or a congested, drippy nose with no specific cause.
    • Nonallergic rhinitis symptoms are similar to those of hay fever (allergic rhinitis)
      Triggers of nonallergic rhinitis symptoms vary and it can include certain odors or irritants in the air, weather changes, some medications, certain foods, and chronic health conditions.

    Signs and symptoms of non allergic rhinitis:

    Some of the symptoms of non allergic rhinitis are often similar to. Allergic rhinitis but the appearance of episodes occurs once or twice a year, some common symptoms. Associated with allergic rhinitis are as follow: 

    • Stuffy or runny nose 
    • Sneezing 
    • Mucus in the throat 
    • Cough 

    Nonallergic rhinitis doesn’t usually cause itchy nose, eyes or throat — symptoms associated with allergies such as hay fever. 

    Management and treatment of rhinitis:

      • Vamana: Therapeutic emesis
      • Virechana: Therapeutic purgation
      • Panchkarma
      • Nasya treatment/Nasal drop therapy: herbal preparation of medicine are administered in nasal passage such as anu faila and shadbindu taila.

    Ayurvedic medicines can also be administered to improve the immunity of the body, such as 

      • Sitopaladi churna 
      • Triphaladi thailam 
      • Maha lakshmi vikas rasa 
      • Rasnadi churna

    Above medicines must only be administered only on the advice of registered ayurvedic practitioners. 

    Diet

    Take like diet, lukewarm water 2_4 times a day, use kapha nashak ingredients which are in hot potency such as ginger, turmeric, black pepper, garlic etc.,

    Avoid sweets, bananas, curd, yoghurt, ice-creams etc., which elevates the symptoms.

    Lifestyle management

    • Wear a mask when you go outside 
    • Always take a shower with warm water 
    • Take steam daily before sleep 
    • Do exercise daily for at least 30 mins. 
    • Perform the pranayama to improve the respiratory system and immunity.
