    Overview

    Liver is the second largest organ of the human body, also known as the powerhouse of the human body, it is responsible for performing various functions. Fatty liver is also known as hepatic steatosis. It happens when fat builds up in the liver. Usually a small amount of fat gets deposited on the liver which is quite normal, but when excessive fat deposits on the liver then it may become a serious health issue and need not to be ignored.

    Liver performs a lot of functions like filtering of the blood vessels, metabolism of cholesterol, and eliminates harmful substances from the body. Excessive deposition of fat in the liver causes liver inflammation resulting in liver damage and loss of function of liver.

    Causes of fatty liver

    There are mainly two types of fatty liver mainly due to alcohol consumption and causes other than alcohol consumption known as

    1. Alcoholic fatty liver
    2. Non Alcoholic fatty liver 

    Alcoholic fatty liver:

    Consumption of excessive amounts of Alcohol causes fatty liver. It is a common and first stage of alcohol related liver disease. Usually the liver takes 48 hrs to metabolise fats deposited due to alcohol, alcohol consumption on daily basis disturbs the fat metabolism and its elimination, resulting in fatty liver.

    Non-alcoholic fatty liver:

    It is diagnosed due to excessive fats consumption, inflammation of liver and there are also some diseases that are responsible for fatty liver. 

    • obesity, 
    • type 2 diabetes
    • insulin resistance, 
    • metabolic syndrome, 
    • high levels of fats in the blood 
    • medicines, 
    • hepatitis C 
    • Pregnancy associated. 

    Symptoms associated with fatty liver:

    Before going for symptoms first we need to know about the stages of fatty liver.

    Fatty liver can progress through four stages:

    • Simple fatty liver: It is the first stage of fatty liver, where deposition of fat on the liver occurs in excess. It is not a harmful stage.
    • Steatohepatitis: It is said to be a second phase of fatty liver disease, here along with deposition of fat on liver, inflammation of liver also takes place.
    • Fibrosis: It is the third stage of fatty liver disease where inflammation in the liver has now caused scarring. But, the liver can still generally function normally.
    • Cirrhosis: Scarring of the liver starts wide spreading. Disturbing the liver’s ability to function. This is the most severe stage and is irreversible.

    Signs and symptoms:

    • abdominal pain 
    • loss of appetite 
    • weight loss 
    • weakness or fatigue 
    • nausea 
    • itchy skin 
    • yellowish discoloration of skin and eyes 
    • easy bruising or bleeding 
    • dark-colored urine 
    • pale stools 
    • fluid accumulation in the abdomen (ascites)
    • Swelling in legs 
    • Mental trauma 

    Management of fatty liver disease:

    Fatty liver can only be treated by stopping the root cause of it.

    Lifestyle regimen

    Don't:

    1. Avoid fat based foods in excess. 
    2. Stop taking very high protein diet such as red meat, cheese etc
    3. Avoid the intake of sugary and bakery foods. 
    4. Cigrette smoking and alcohol consumption must be stopped.
    5. Avoid sleeping immediately after the meal 

    Do's:

    1. Reduce the weight if obese
    2. Eat healthy diet, use polyunsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids 
    3. Take omega 3 fatty acids 
    4. Use a liver purify syrup such as liv 52 
    5. Detox the body to improve the metabolism 
    6. Exercise regularly for at least 30 mins daily. 
    7. Add fruits and vegetable salads to your diet
