    Erectile Dysfunction

Sex is now regarded as a basic instinct like hunger. Sexual activity, however, demands complete concentration and relaxation. It cannot be performed with hassle and tension. Persons who are usually tense and over-occupied are unable to follow these norms. Many persons, therefore suffer from sexual dysfunctions. The most common male sensual dysfunction is impotence or erectile dysfunction.

Erectile dysfunction means the inability of a male to achieve or maintain an erection long enough to have sexual intercourse. As we discussed earlier, this is the most common male sensual dysfunction, and almost every man has experienced this in his lifetime. Occasional inability is normal. However, if the situation occurs frequently, there could be a serious underlying cause such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes.

    Prevalence of erectile dysfunction

Several studies accessed the prevalence of erectile dysfunction. The Massachusetts Male Aging Study reported a prevalence of 52%. The study demonstrated that erectile dysfunction is increasingly prevalent with age: approximately 40% of men are affected at age 40 and nearly 70% of men are affected at age 70. The prevalence of complete erectile dysfunction increased from 5% at age 40 to 15% at age 70. Age was the variable most strongly associated with erectile dysfunction.

    What causes erectile dysfunction?

    • It was once believed that erectile dysfunction was mainly a psychological issue, but it is known that it is more often caused by physical problems. For example, when a person has high cholesterol, the fat and plaque may get deposited in the coronary arteries, blocking the flow to the heart and triggering a heart attack due to insufficient blood supply. Similarly, the plaque may get deposited in the blood vessels leading to the penis, resulting in a penis attack in which the blood supply to the penis is insufficient to create or sustain an erection, resulting in erectile dysfunction.
    • Psychologically, the condition can arise when there is stress, work pressure, no emotional bonding between partners, or when one of the partners is not interested in intercourse. If a person is suffering from a chronic illness, his sexual power decreases.
    • Erectile dysfunction can also be caused by heart disease, atherosclerosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, alcoholism, tobacco use and many other health conditions.

Signs and Symptoms of erectile dysfunction

Erectile difficulties can manifest in many ways. For example, some men are to achieve an erection but are not able to maintain it. Others get an erection but it is not extremely rigid. Some only have problems when they are with a new partner, and a few others have problems when they are with a long-time partner. And there are those who can’t achieve an erection at all.

    How to manage erectile dysfunction?

    • Avoid hot, spicy, and dry foods; alcohol and tobacco use; excessive physical ad mental exertion and working in hot conditions.
    • Add foods that increase semen formation like black gram, purified butter, milk, dates, almonds, figs, raisins, licorice, freshly harvested grains, sugarcane juice, and asparagus. A cold hip bath is useful to relax the muscles of the pelvic region.
    • Regular body massage brings vitality to the body. Engage in regular exercise, reduce stress and get enough sleep.
    • Get treatment for any associated conditions, such as anxiety, depression, heart disease or diabetes.

Does erectile dysfunction and impotence the same or different

Typically, these terms are interchangeable. However, I find there are vast differences in terms of the connotations each term carries. Erectile dysfunction is the term often used to describe a range of conditions -- from an occasional inability to maintain or sustain an erection to a mild degree or inability to maintain or get an erection.

In contrast, the term "impotence" sounds very definitive, almost a complete inability to have an erection. This term has a very negative connotation. It sounds like it means a loss of power or no

power, meaning that if a man has erectile dysfunction, he has lost his power, and I don't think that's true.

    What causes erectile dysfunction?

There are a number of conditions that can lead to erectile dysfunction in men, some of which include:

    1. Age: Even in the absence of other health conditions, age becomes an independent risk factor for erectile dysfunction. The age that doctors usually consider to be a risk factor for erectile dysfunction is about 50. However, it is not uncommon for men in their 30s and 40s to have erectile dysfunction.
    1. Medications: Certain medications can cause erectile dysfunction. For example, those patients who have been prescribed beta blockers or other medications to lower their blood pressure will notice that these medications may also lower the blood pressure of their penis, which can interfere with their ability to get and maintain an erection.
    2. Obesity: Obesity is a risk factor for almost every medical problem that we encounter today, and erectile dysfunction is no exception.
    1. Other Medical Conditions: Often, general medical conditions that bring patients to the doctor, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol or diabetes, can also bring patients in to see a urologist about erectile dysfunction.
If I got ED, is there any treatment in Ayurveda?

Yes, ED is completely curable through Ayurvedic procedures and medicines. However, the treatment depends on the causes of ED and the patient’s condition.
